Packing List
Clothing
- 1 pair of walking/comfortable shoes
- 1 pair of sandals (light weight)
- 1 pair thongs (for shared bathrooms and can be used as slippers)
- 1 rainproof jacket (warm climate) or gortex type light weight all weather jacket for cooler climates
- 2-3 pairs of shorts/capris
- 2 pairs of pants, 1 belt
- 1 swimsuit (packed in a plastic bag)
- 2-4 pairs of socks (cotton blend or microfibre)
- 5 pairs of underwear (silk, lace, or micro-fiber dries quickest)
- 2 bras
- 1 - 2 shirts/blouses (long/short-sleeved)
- 1 - 2 T-shirts (light weight fitted)
- 1 -2 tank tops (light weight fitted to be worn under blouses or with a shawl for dress up occasions, also great for hot climates)
- 1 sleeveless blouse (for hot climates)
- 1 light sweaters--front zip (fleece)
- 1 long sleeved sweater (cooler climates)
- 1-2 light weight skirts skirts (ex. rayon)
- 1 - 2 dresses (optional)--especially for hot climates
- 1 hat (wide brimmed)
- 1 shawl ( to wear for cool evenings, dress up or to double as a scarf)
- 2 fleece vest--light weight (optional--for cooler climates)
- 1 pair leggings (doubles as underwear for cool days/nights and pajama bottoms
- 1 long T-shirt (coupled with a sarong or leggings it will keep you warm and keep you presentable for a dorm room or a shared bathroom)
Medicine and First Aid Kit
- Rubbing alcohol pads
- Prescription medication and prescription
- OTC remedies (whatever works for you): Pepto, decongestants, Tylenol,etc.
- Syringes if for traveling to developing countries
- Antibiotic Cream
- Band Aids
- Travel Doctor prescribed items such as antibiotics, malaria prophylactics
Cosmetics and Toiletries
- Hanging toiletry kit
- Lip stick and holder (which has a mirror)
- Eye pencils and eyebrow pencil (I find these add color, are lightweight to carry and in hot climates they do not run)
- Shampoo and conditioner (I brought 150 ml/6oz of each which lasts around 2 months) Some people take all in one. I find the travel is hard on my hair so prefer the separate products
- Soap/holder and scrubber (scrubber is a face cloth size)
- Liquid face cleaner (75 ml lasts about 2 months)
- Toothpaste and toothbrush (my 4 oz/115 g tube lasted the whole 3 months)
- Small dental floss (12 yd/30m)
- Disposable razor ( I usually wax but this is for touch ups)
- Deodorant (48 g was more than enough for a 3 month trip)
- Face moisturizer with sun screen 15 - 30spf (100 ml)(also take one sample size for the bathroom/shower bag)
- Liquid foundation (sample size)
- Face powder ( I use a compact which has a mirror)
- Chap-Stick/lip balm with sun screen
- Lotion
- foldable brush/comb combo
- hair gel (4 oz) and/or hair spray (1 oz)
- cotton swabs (Q-Tips)

- fingernail clippers/file or emery board ( 2 -3)
- J-cloths (disposable cloth to use as a washcloth)

- Spare glasses and/or prescription, or contact lenses and supplies

- small vial of perfume or oil (sample size)
- feminine hygiene products (bring enough for a few days, these are readily available, except tampons which are hard to find in Asia and South America)
- Hair color if you are blonde and traveling in Asia, Middle East or South America ( I take it out of the box and wrap the bottles in plastic bags. I mix small amounts to touch up the roots)
- Condoms (just in case)
I found it easy to limit the number of clothes I brought, but it was very hard for me to give up on toiletries Call it vanity, but I just can't leave the make-up and skin care products at home!
Money and Security
Money belt: Passport, plane ticket, debit card, credit cards, traveler's checks, rail pass, driver's license (if you're renting a car)
Security: Bury copies of your passport, plane ticket, and prescriptions in the bottom of your luggage
Hosteling Extras
- Towel ( Light weight pack towel. I use a small light towel or a linen tea towel)
- Sleep sheet
Packing Essentials (non clothing)
These are the essentials (non clothing)
- Universal sink plug
- Adaptor for electronics (I have a universal one)
- Flashlight (headlight—hand free is ideal)
- Zip Lock bags
- Knife (one with a good blade and bottle/can opener)
- Sun block—15SP or higher
- Shawl/Scarf (like Pashmina)
- Light Cotton scarf
- Locks
- Light weight bicycle lock cord
- Tote bag (light/see through if possible)
- Sarong
- Small note book/pen
- Calculator (small)
- Micro flashlight to fasten to day pack, cosmetics case or purse
- Plastic bag for laundry (dirty clothes)
- Post it notes (several sizes for marking guide books)
